Bright future ahead

Pretty good news for the unit trust industry!

Saturday August 30, 2008

Bright future ahead

The domestic unit trust industry accounts for more than 70% of the Malaysian investment management industry.

THE unit trust industry grew further during the first six months, with the launch of new funds, which brought about an increase in the number of units in circulation. Thirty-five new funds were introduced, bringing the total to 530 as at end-June.

Investors continued to view unit trusts as a viable investment instrument, as reflected by the growth in the number of accounts and units in circulation of 14.4% and 10.7%, respectively.

The Islamic unit trust segment continued to grow with the launch of eight new funds to reach 136, while the net asset value (NAV) increased 6.6% to RM18bil as at end-June from RM16.9bil as at end-2007.

The NAV of the overall unit trust industry, however, decreased 5.6% to RM159bil and accounted for 17.7% of the market capitalisation of Bursa Malaysia as at end-June 2008 (end-2007: 15.3%), in line with the decline in the KL Composite Index.

Unit trust fund managers continue to diversify into foreign markets following the liberalisation of the threshold for investments abroad, which was progressively raised to 50% of NAV of resident funds in April 2007.

During the first six months of 2008, 27 new unit trust funds were launched for investment in foreign markets. As at end-June, 11 funds had invested RM401mil in foreign assets, bringing the total number of funds invested in foreign markets to 160 with investments totalling RM13.3bil.

The growth of real estate investment trusts (REITs) and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) has gradually gained momentum. While the total number of REITs, including two Islamic REITs, listed on Bursa Malaysia remained at 13, the total asset size rose to RM7.7bil as at end-June (end-2007: RM7bil).

Meanwhile, Asia's first Islamic ETF was listed on Bursa Malaysia in January, bringing the total to three ETFs during the first six months of the year. The market capitalisation of ETFs rose to RM1.2bil as at end-June from RM531.8mil as at end-2007.

The REIT industry is set to grow further following the recent measures announced in August to enhance Bursa Malaysia as a destination for REIT listings as well as to promote a vibrant and competitive REIT industry.

The measures include raising foreign equity in REITs to 70% from 49%, providing greater flexibilities for REIT managers to manage their portfolios, and allowing REIT managers to issue units up to 20% of its fund size without seeking the mandate from unitholders.

There's no one here! Elaine has gone off for the weekend and the research team... have all gone back! That's pretty amazing considering they usually stay back till almost 8 pm each day.

Why am I still here? Because I have a story due. A story about nothing that has to be made into something by lunch tomorrow or Nick (mata sepet) will fly from Singapore to kettlebell my ass.

I've been thinking about my nothing story. Thinking. Thinking. Thinking. I've been so used been given assignments where the topic has already been chosen. But when its my turn to choose something to write about... I'm stuck suffering from an insanely frustrating case of the writer's block.

I've been told to stick to a topic that I am passionate about, but well.. the things I want to write won't pay for my supposedly atas lifestyle that some have accused me of leading.

7 pm. Thursday. 28 August 2008.

I am in office, looking out of the window...
LAUGHING AT THE IDIOTS WHO LEFT EARLY TO BE STUCK IN THE HORRENDOUS JAM.

Okay, back to work. I've insulted enough for the day. I'm happy now.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

PERMATANG Pauh, 26 Aug 2008 - Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has won the by-election of the Permatang Pauh seat by 31,195 votes. Was checking for unbias and uncensored news from the web and guess what?? The most popular blogsite www.malaysia-today.net was blocked by TMnet since 7.30pm last night!! Hmmm... I wonder why.

"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea"

It upsets me when...

I see people pushing for a change when they don't know the people behind it

We never know the real man behind the public persona. We will never know the truths (or lies) he whispers at night. The things that are done for well being of the nation or the things that are said to be done for the better of the rakyat. We will never know what is real

Tired of the way things are, we are stirred by the desire for change and a different regime. We want new policies that bring about economic growth. We want excellence. Thus, we are taken in by charismatic promises and swept into a strong current for reform

I am all for change. I want a better tomorrow for my kids. I want Malaysia to be a strong, powerful country where the all races live in harmony

But, it pains me when I meet people who say they want change without considering the person behind the face they worship

I am not saying NO to a chance for change

What I'm saying is...

Not to be blinded by the desire for change that you lose sight of what really matters

Think about the cause you are campaigning for

The past may not predict the future, but the past is a good indication of the things to come

Choose wisely

It saddens me when...

I see people opting for a change, thinking that they have no other option

As depressing as it may seem, but this is the case today. We are caught in 'between the devil and the deep blue sea'

A known risk and an unknown, but scary risk

Both do not sound good, but in a situation where we lack the abundance of choice...

What do we do?

What can we do?

*sigh*

Last Saturday, Vic had planned and organised a 'happy birthday to Allie' party. Vic did everything! He invited friends and family. He was the garden party's chef with the help of Nigel, Nigel's parents, Clara, Don and Kat.

The party was executed perfectly. There was enough food, enough drinks (or too much!) and loadsa sweet dessert. Diana, Rosalynn, Erik, Li Ming and Mama (my grandma) contributed to the spread as well. My darling cousin Sara and ah lui aka Vonnie Khoo brought PINK helium balloons, which I just loved! LOVED! and everyone, thanks for coming.. it was a blast being 12 again! LOL!

Scroll down for some of the moments captured with my new baby, the Panasonic Lumix FZ18! :D

I shall start off my showcasing the FOOD!

Chef Vittorio's Mushrooms (gosh, that sounded wrong!)

Chef Vittorio's creation

Nigel's dad makes kick-ass mamak mee. There was also chicken devil curry, made my Nigel's mom that I forgot to snap pictures of! *GASP!*

Nigel's mom also made lamb stew. Oh. I love this one

KY wanted to challenge who can create better food decor. This is the original bruschetta

KY's

Mine

I guess we know who won! :D

Di's sago

I think Clara made this...

Don the professional baker makes real good cupcakes

Rosalynn's choc cake (why you never bring the ice cream ah?)

Fruit salad by Clara

And that's all for the food pictures. You have to wait to see photos of people!

muahahaha

*laughs evilly*

It will be real soon, I promise!

Of food and bokeh

On Sunday, we had the RM5 chicken chop in SS3 again. Yum and cheap :D

Met up with Chze Hong and he brought me to eat fatty (but so sinfully good) char siew in Tengkat Tong Shin. And he taught me to bokeh and to use my cam's Aperture Priority mode. Not bad teacher. Very patient and clear. Perhaps you ought to consider a career in teaching? :P

And then... during dinner at Siu Siu in Sg Besi, I attempted to use my new found skills... to bokeh and it didn't quite turn out. Who am I kidding?? It didn't turn out at ALL! *whine*

The crab claw turned out better than the earlier shot

Okay, time to zZzZz!

The great prank by Vic

?????????!!!!!! Diamond ring?!

So damn char dou!!!

A birthday of pranks, I tell you! First this 'surprise'.. Diamond ring box with a pair of thongs stuffed inside. Yes, no diamond ring because if there were, I would have thrown it at Vic for pranking me! Cis.

Then, during lunchtime... I get this call:

Male voice: Hello, Allison Lee Chin Li?
Me: Er... Yes?
Male voice: This is your HR department. Are you coming into office today?
Me: Er... No.
Male voice: Did you apply for leave?
Me: Er... er... yes, but it was not approved yet and Elaine said I could go off anyway.
Male voice (starting to sound REALLY familiar): Do you know that you aren't supposed to on leave without getting it approved? How now?
Me: Er....
Male voice: Where are you now?
Me: (why would my HR department ask me this?! and wait a minute... HR has only one person and its a SHE!)
Me: WHO'S THIS?
Male Voice: muahahhahahaha ADRIAN LA! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

---.---'

Anyway, to make up for pranking me.. Vic ... gave me this:

THERE IS A GOD! MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!
:D

*woot!*

Okay, over-drama. I guess my many many hints have not gone unnoticed. Vic is not as deaf or as blur as I thought (Sorry, still sore over the prank).

I LOVE MY LUMIX!

It's so user friendly. Fast. Has a real nice body. Firm. Solid. Lovely macro shots. Kick-ass zoom capabilities. Takes good portraits. Leica lens. Relatively light. Taking photos has never been easier.

But most of all... I love it because I know a lot of research and effort was put in place choosing the right camera for me. I am not disappointed. :) Thank you!

Below are the shots from my baby... the Panasonix Lumix FZ-18.

Yabbies!!!!

Yabbies, yabbies, yabbies, yabbies, yabbies, yabbies... YABBIES

Have fun and hope you have a fantastic day.

Blogged wif loads and tons of love, :)

Lights camera action!

Wahsai. Yesterday morning was a huge test for me... appearing on video. We have a segment on the fundsupermart.com website where we will have video interviews with fund managers, etc and I had my first video interview.

Mind you, I suck at this sorta things (I died the semester in college where public speaking was a course syllable). Anyway, during the rehearsal, I kept fumbling my lines... mixing up the interviewee's designation and company name. I fidget too much. I don't smile. I blink like mad. Can even see the script I'm holding cos I keep toying with it. I'm every director's nightmare.

I felt that the actual session went much better than the rehearsals... I did the intro bit in eight shots and the kind graphics team said that they have had up to 20 takes before, so I was OK. Everyone was exceedingly patient with nervous me. :) I will add the link here once the video is up on the website (when FSM.my goes live in Sept!!!).

I'm on leave tomorrow and its going to be one sweeet weekend for me! :D

The loathsome Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

I get UTI more frequently than anyone I know... so much so that I'm pretty much accustomed to whatever pains that it creates.

For those who are unfamiliar with UTI, Wikipedia describes it as:

"... a bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary tract. When bacteria get into the bladder or kidney and multiply in the urine, they cause a UTI. The most common type of UTI is a bladder infection which is also often called cystitis. Another kind of UTI is a kidney infection, known as pyelonephritis, and is much more serious."

I remember the first time UTI hit me.. It was during my college days (over four years ago!) and I had spent the entire morning and afternoon glued to the PC playing SIMS. I love SIMS. Once I start on that game, I can't stop till my SIMS has a huge-ass mansion that would make Hugh Hefner jealous (minus the bunnies) and when I actually got up to go the loo.. an unfamiliar (at that time) burning sensation down there was felt. Sweet memories of my first UTI.

Now its the 123rd time UTI has attacked me and frankly I'm tired. Its not that I'm a 'dirty' girl, but its just that I'm so freaking lazy to get up and go to the loo. I get carried away with work, games, etc... and when I do go.. it's too late and I get that 'feeling'. I just had it last Friday. I'm considering going for long-term medical treatment to combat this nuisance... will think about it further as I don't fancy the idea of being on drugs for an extended period.

Why do I have to treat my UTI?
1. Its helluva annoying!
2. I heard it can cause infertility
3. Once it hits the pelvis area, shit really hits the fan - so said this doc I visited once
4. If I don't treat it, it will keep coming back like a boomerang. More painful each time as the infection has spread higher up the urinary tract
5. I heard that you can pass it to your child if you are pregnant! Poor baby... come in this world already susah want to kencing!

I can either go on probiotics, some strong drugs or drink cranberry and eat yoghurt everyday. The eating and drinking sounds like fun.

I'm feeling lazy, so there will be no descriptions... just photos

We stayed at Villa Dahlia. Not bad. Quite cheap RM280 or so per night for a three-bedroom apartment. The place is decent and clean, but don't expect added stuff like towels or complimentary newspapers. Good place to go with a bunch of friends, esp when on a budget. It is located in Tanah Rata, but its nearby to Brinchang.

Who's messy bed?!
